Developmental Courses

drweed.jpgThe faculty of Keuka College has designed its writing and math sequences to prepare students to meet the expectations of its undergraduate program, as well as prepare them for a variety of graduate and professional situations. With the realization that students arrive at college with different strengths and skill levels, Keuka has implemented developmental courses. English 100 capitalizes on the students’ strengths while enabling learners to acquire the written competencies needed for success in their academic coursework. Math 095 provides students with a solid foundation in the basics of mathematics necessary to advance to more complex courses.

ENG 100: Fundamentals of College Writing

This is a non-credit bearing course intended to prepare students for the successful completion of the composition sequence of Keuka College: English 110 and English 112. Students are placed in this course based on performance scores on the writing placement exam administered before the beginning of the semester. It is designed to enhance the students’ knowledge of standard written English, the writing process, and effective reading and critical thinking strategies. In addition, each student in the developmental class meets weekly with a writing professional in the office of Academic Success at Keuka. It is required that this professional relationship continues throughout the first year, thus giving the student the opportunity to have one-on-one instruction in writing, as well as that received in the classroom. Students required to take English 100 must pass the course with a minimum of C- before beginning English 110. Offered every fall semester.

MAT 095: Developmental Mathematics

Required of all students achieving a score of 1 on the mathematics placement examination. An examination of the operations and properties of the real number system is followed by stress on algebraic expressions, simplification of expressions, solving equations, and verbal problems. A student placed in this course must achieve a grade of S prior to entry in any core course in the area of mathematics. The class schedule for this course is the equivalent to one three-credit course. This course will be offered as a pass/fail option, with a grade of satisfactory or unsatisfactory.
